The Most Underrated Way to Grow Your Podcast (For Free)

If you’re looking for ways to grow your podcast, you’ve probably heard plenty of advice about social media, paid advertising, SEO, newsletters, and video clips.

While all of those strategies can help, there’s one growth tactic that consistently delivers results and costs absolutely nothing:

Being a guest on other podcasts.

It’s one of the most effective (and underrated) ways to reach new listeners.

Think about it. When you appear on someone else’s show, you’re speaking directly to an audience that already listens to podcasts. Even better, they’ve already built trust with the host who invited you. That trust creates a warm introduction that is much more powerful than a social media ad or promotional post.

Instead of convincing strangers to discover your podcast from scratch, you’re being recommended by a creator they already know and respect.

That’s a huge advantage!

Guest podcasting also creates benefits that extend far beyond audience growth.

Most podcasts include links to their guests in the show notes, which means you often gain a valuable backlink to your website, newsletter, or podcast. Those links can drive traffic long after the episode is published.

Then there’s the content itself.

A single podcast interview can be repurposed into dozens of assets.
-Pull quotes can become LinkedIn posts.
-Short video clips can be shared on Instagram or YouTube.
-Key insights can be turned into newsletter content or blog articles.

The list goes on and on. One conversation can fuel weeks of content marketing.

There’s another benefit: relationships.

Every guest appearance is an opportunity to connect with another creator in your space. Those relationships can lead to future collaborations, referrals, introductions, speaking opportunities, and even friendships. In many cases, the long-term value of the relationship ends up being just as important as the audience exposure.

Take Substack collaborations for instance. The community grows, the contributions, connections for the authors, readers – everyone benefits from these relationships grown through collaborations.

Now here’s my big tip about guesting:

Don’t immediately target the biggest shows in your industry.

Instead, look for podcasts that are one tier above your current reach. They should be large enough to introduce you to a meaningful new audience but small enough that booking a guest spot is realistic.

A simple goal can make a huge difference: pitch one podcast every week.

That’s 52 opportunities each year to share your story, expand your network, and reach new listeners.

You don’t need a massive advertising budget to grow your podcast.

Sometimes the fastest way to build your audience is to borrow one.

What’s stopping you from pitching your first guest appearance?
